Didier Reynders responded that the government would include gender lines in the constitution.

As with all member states, it is important for Hungary that the adoption of legislative and constitutional amendments is preceded by a broad debate, European Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders said at a press conference in Brussels on Friday.

Reynders noted that the Hungarian government presented a bill amending the Basic Law on Tuesday night, hours after the emergency law was passed. The draft available on the parliament’s website also contains two amendments on the perception of the family and parenting.

On the one hand, it would be included in the Basic Law that “Hungary protects the right of children to their own identity according to their gender of birth and ensures an education based on the constitutional identity and the Christian culture of our country.” Or “the mother is a woman, the father is a man.”

The Commissioner noted in relation to the proposed amendment to the Hungarian Constitution:

Although this is a competence of the Member States, Member States must respect their international human rights obligations and current EU law.

He also said that the European Commission will pay special attention to the correct application of EU legislation, as well as the examination of compliance with international obligations. He added that respect for the rule of law and human rights is an obligation for all member states.

We want a society in which pluralism, non-discrimination and tolerance are guaranteed

Added.

Vera Jourová, vice-president of the European Commission for Values and Transparency, said at the press conference that the European Commission respects the rule of law, which means that if a law passed by a member state violates EU law and the Treaty of the EU, takes immediate legal action.

He also added that there are serious concerns about the situation of the media in Hungary regarding freedom of expression and the working conditions of independent media. The EU Commission addressed the concerns in its Report on the Rule of Law published in late September. Among the concerns listed in the report, Jourová highlighted that the European Commission was of the opinion that public access to the media was hampered in Hungary.

There is pressure on the independence and efficiency of the media council, partial transparency of media ownership, a threat to media pluralism, as evidenced by the establishment of the Central European Press and Media Foundation (Kesma), and concerns about maintaining state advertising for government and pro-government media. creating the opportunity for their direct influence, ”he said.

Jourová added that independent media are subject to systematic obstruction and intimidation in Hungary.

The number of independent publishing offices of power is steadily declining, and those that still exist are trying to stay afloat with a growing headwind. At HVG we persevere, we do not give in to pressure and we bring national and international news every day.

That is why we ask you, our readers, to support us, support us, join our membership and renew it!
