The epidemic is ravaging Europe, but unfortunately Hungary is no exception, Cecília Müller told the press conference of the operation on Thursday. The chief doctor explained that the coronavirus infection (Covid-19) had been detected in 3,927 new Hungarian citizens, thus increasing the number of infected people identified in Hungary to 126,790. The majority of the deaths were 87 elderly and chronically ill patients, bringing the number of deaths to 2,784.

The hospital cares for 6,426 coronavirus patients, 486 of whom are connected to ventilators. The chief doctor stressed that the measures that have been introduced are aimed at reducing the number of contacts.

Since it is no longer possible to know exactly who the infectious person is, it has become clear that strict measures are needed. It is not just the fear of fines that prevents us from following the rules. Everyone has a responsibility in this! I am counting on everyone and I hope that they understand and see the need for these measures. There are big problems in Europe. Many countries have reached the limit of their performance. Hungary is still in a very good position: it ranks 10th in Europe in terms of infections per million inhabitants and 15th in terms of number of deaths.

Cecília Müller said, adding that we are talking about increasing numbers. Several of the most infected are being hospitalized and, as he said, this puts extreme pressure on the health system.

Today, 85 percent of Hungarian settlements are affected. Regardless, I think we should look at the whole country as if it is infected everywhere. Therefore, this figure should not mean that the remaining 15 percent do not carry the virus, not even asymptomatically. We are responsible for each other, we follow the rules

asked the medical director, adding that it is time for everyone to think about being partners in managing the epidemic and doing everything possible to protect their loved ones and the Hungarian people. The medical director said the average age of the deceased was 76, with the youngest being 20 years old.

Since the outbreak of the epidemic, this 20-year-old has been the youngest victim of the coronavirus in Hungary. His underlying diseases included epilepsy, severe mental retardation, childhood autism, pathological wasting, and anemia.

The medical director said social workers care for hundreds of thousands of patients and the elderly in some 1,600 social institutions. Of these, there are positive cases in 174 institutions, but the incidence rate is only four percent among caregivers, while positivity is only one percent among nurses.

When asked if he could say goodbye to the dying relative despite the ban on visiting him, the medical director said: this fundamental right has not changed, everyone deserves it, after individual recognition. The National Center for Public Health sent an information letter to the institutions to ensure that these rights were guaranteed everywhere.
