Kim last appeared at a public event on October 21, when he visited a cemetery in the country’s southern Pyongyang province, where Chinese soldiers killed in the 1950-53 Korean War were buried.

An official at the Seoul Reunification Ministry said that Kim’s absence was not attributed importance because similar “disappearances” had been reported several times in the past.

The North Korean leader did not appear in public for twenty days in April this year. At the time, it was rumored that his health had deteriorated significantly, he had undergone heart surgery, and even the news of his death. Some believed in the coronavirus epidemic to find the reason for its withdrawal. Kim was seen again at a fertilizer factory grand opening in early May, then disappeared from public view for weeks again.

Pyongyang has yet to respond to the November 3 US presidential election and has not congratulated Joe Biden, a Democratic presidential candidate. An official with the Department of National Unification pointed out that it is conceivable that North Korea has never been silent for so long since the US presidential election.
