The EU buys 300 million of one of the most promising vaccines. The product is manufactured by Pfizer and BioNTech and is said to provide 90 percent protection.

Coronavirus: the second wave, the second closure

Later than expected by many, but in mid-November, the Hungarian government also decided to try to curb the second wave of the coronavirus epidemic by introducing restrictions. At the time of the decision, 5,000 new infections had been identified per day and the number of deaths from the virus mostly ranged from 50 to 100 in 24 hours. The first step is partial closure, but how effective it is is questionable. Follow our news!

The European Commission is approving a contract that will allow the purchase of up to 300 million doses of the coronavirus vaccine from Pfizer in the United States and BioNTech in Germany, European Commission spokesman Erik Mamer said in Brussels on Wednesday.

The agreement will initially allow all EU member states to buy 200 million doses of the vaccine, as well as the possibility to request an additional 100 million doses if the vaccine has been shown to be safe and effective against the coronavirus. The vaccine, developed by the two companies, is the most promising coronavirus vaccine ever produced.

therefore, the European Commission is working to ensure its rapid implementation across Europe as soon as it is available.

Pfizer and BioNTech announced Monday that they have achieved efficiencies of more than 90 percent based on preliminary data collected in the final third phase of vaccine testing. According to them, they can produce approximately fifty million batches of BNT162b2 this year and 1.3 billion next.

The European Commission has previously signed contracts with AstraZeneca, Sanofi-GSK and Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies, part of the Johnson & Johnson group, and is conducting prospective discussions with pharmaceutical companies CureVac and Moderna. This is the fourth contract that the EU commission is entering into with pharmaceutical companies to purchase a coronavirus vaccine.

Andrea Ammon, director of the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), said Wednesday that an optimistic scenario is that a vaccination campaign against the coronavirus could begin in the European Union in the first three months of next year.
