There is no longer an area in Hungary where invasive crested insects have not appeared in the last five years, according to a Facebook insect community survey released by Bábolna Bio.
Of the more than 3,000 settlements in the country, 14,000 participants who completed the questionnaire in two weeks reported detecting errors in two weeks. Most came from Budapest and the larger cities, but the actual infection is best reflected in the population figures.
The presence of invasive crested insects was found to a greater extent in the southern counties. Baranya has the highest infection rate based on population-based observations, but Tolna and Békés counties are also not far behind. The map shows the lowest numbers in Vas, Győr-Moson-Sopron, Nógrád and Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg counties.
Budapest is considered to be moderately infected, but there is great variation between districts and, unsurprisingly, respondents completed the questionnaire where the proportion of green areas is highest.
The Asian marble bug and the green migratory bug, which have long been established, are found in almost all parts of the country, but 26 percent of those who completed the questionnaire have recently encountered a western bug introduced to Hungary, which showing that these species are capable of propagating. The presence of the leaf-legged bug shows a spatially different picture than the other two invasive species.
Bábolna Bio wishes to repeat the insect survey from time to time to obtain information on the further spread of these insect species based on the observations of the population and will also launch a new survey to get an idea of where and to what extent they have been spread rats and mice that pose a threat to public health.
