Due to a serious side effect, Brazil stops testing one of China’s coronavirus vaccines

Brazil suspends clinical trials of a coronavirus vaccine developed by Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinovac due to a “serious side effect” that occurred on October 29, the Brazilian health authority (Anvisa) reported on Monday.

Anvisa has not disclosed any details about the side effect, it is not yet known if it occurred in Brazil or in any other country where the product is being tested. It was also not disclosed why the incident had just been made public.

The Brazilian institute for medical research Butantan is preparing to issue a statement on the matter on Tuesday morning at local time.

The coronavirus is spreading rapidly in the largest and most populous country in South America, with a population of 210 million. On Monday alone, 10,917 new infections were identified, according to the Health Ministry. Since the outbreak, there have been 5,675,032 confirmed infections and 162,628 deaths. In terms of the number of infected people, only the United States and India are ahead of Brazil.
