Coronavirus: Viktor Orbán announced an almost complete shutdown for Hungary

The Prime Minister’s Facebok side was extremely active this morning, also sharing photo and video posts about the arrival of operational staff for the morning meeting. These did not yet contain specific details, but based on speeches in recent days, they further strengthened the expectation that the Prime Minister would soon announce new measures to curb the corona virus epidemic. This was confirmed by the new post by Viktor Orbán, experience shows that when an announcement is promised “soon”, it usually happens within a few hours.

Other steps may be in response to the accelerated spread of the epidemic, and recent data released today confirms the view that the spread of the coronavirus is not effectively curbed by previous measures.

The new steps may be logical reactions to epidemiological developments, quite interesting only because the government announced a few days ago the recent not particularly strong restrictive measures. Since then, nothing has happened in the Hungarian epidemic that could not have been expected, and the effect of the steps has certainly not yet been reflected in the data, which is only realistic in a few days. So the main question is whether the government has taken another soft step, confident in its effectiveness, or this time has it committed to stronger restrictive measures. None of this would be surprising, the government is characterized by a quick response if you suddenly change your mind. It is memorable that in the first wave, for example, Viktor Orbán defended the opening hours of schools on Friday morning, and they were no longer open on Monday.

Over the weekend, one of the education unions in a statement urged parents not to take their children to school or kindergarten. For this reason, it will be particularly interesting if there will be a change in the order of education. A full shutdown does not seem likely at this time.
