In Romania, the number of coronavirus infections diagnosed in a single day surpassed 10,000 for the first time on Friday. The government is trying to curb the growing epidemic by restricting nights out and making masking mandatory.
According to a report from the Strategic Communications Tribe (GCS) on Friday, 10,260 new infections have been diagnosed in the past 24 hours, eighty percent more than the average for the past two weeks. Another 123 infected people lost their lives, the fourth day of more than 100 deaths.
There are currently more than 83,000 known active infections in Romania, 12,000 of which are treated in hospitals and thousands in intensive care units.
Epidemiology experts hope that if the spread of the infection accelerates at the same rate, hospital spaces for coronavirus patients across the country will be filled within two weeks.In principle, there are still about 250 coronavirus patients in intensive care units, but there has been a shortage of space in the most infected areas for weeks.
At a government meeting in the evening on Thursday night, which was exceptionally attended by President Klaus Iohannis due to the seriousness of the situation, a resolution was passed to toughen epidemiological measures.
Raed Arafat, Secretary of State for Disaster Management, announced new restrictions at his press conference on Friday:
From Monday, the protective mask will be mandatory everywhere outside the apartment, and a curfew will be introduced at night, between 11 pm and 5 ambecause “young people used to party at this time.” As of Monday, it will be forbidden to hold gatherings, entertainment or parties.
According to the decision, employees of public institutions and private companies should also switch to teleworking, if the nature of the activity allows it, and in workplaces that require personal presence, a staggered start should be introduced to allow distance in transport public.
As of Monday, stores and shops will not open after 9:00 p.m., with the exception of gas stations, home shops and pharmacies. Across the country, schools and kindergartens are closing, but daycare and after-school programs may continue to operate.
