Zoltán Balog has been elected bishop of the Reformed Diocese of Dunamellék, the diocese’s electoral committee said after the Nov.5 countdown.

Two candidates for bishop stood for election. Péter Balla, former rector of the Károli Gáspár Reformed University, received 33.1 percent of the votes, 99 votes in number from the presbyteries. Zoltán Balog, former Minister of Human Resources, pastor of the German-speaking Reformed parish in Budapest, has 66.9 percent of the vote, 200 votes in number.
The reelected Sándor Veres continues to serve as the diocese’s chief guardian. The Balog and Veres term is six years.

Elected officials will take office after the electors’ assembly next January. The acting bishop can nominate someone for the position of chief notary, the candidate is chosen by the general assembly.

Zoltán Balog

Born in Ózd on January 7, 1958, Reformed Pastor, Member of Parliament, Secretary of State for Social Inclusion of the Ministry of Public Administration and Justice since 2010, Head of the Ministry of Human Resources from 2012 to 2018, General Director of the Association for Civic Hungary since 2003, then Chairman of the Board of Directors. From 1990 to 1993 he was an expert in the Fidesz parliamentary faction. From 1998 to 2002, he worked in the Office of the Prime Minister as Senior Advisor to the Prime Minister, then from 2002 to 2003 he headed the Department of Social Policy in the Office of the President of the Republic. Since 2003, he has been the CEO of the Association for a Civic Hungary Foundation and later the Chairman of the Board of Directors. Member of Parliament, Chairman of the Committee for Human Rights, Minorities, Civil and Religious Affairs from 2006 to 2010. Since 2009 he has been Chairman of the Hungarian Association for Civic Cooperation.
He is married, the father of five children and the grandfather of eight grandchildren.
