The Islamic State said it was the author of the murder Monday night in Vienna in a statement from Aiaak, a spokesman for a jazz chemist, on the Telegram messaging service, according to dpa and Reuters. They put it that

the attack was carried out by “one of the soldiers of the caliphate.”

On Monday evening, four people of North Austrian-Macedonian nationality, identified by the Austrian authorities as Kujtim Fejzulai, an older man and a woman, a young passerby and a waiter, and killed a German woman, wounded twenty-two in a downtown Vienna near a synagogue.

It turned out that several young people of Balkan origin were involved in the terrorist attacks in Vienna, and Austrian police had just killed an Austrian-born but Albanian-speaking killer on Monday night. The parents of this attacker, named Kujtim Fejulul, came to Austria from North Macedonia, but there is even at least one Albanian from Kosovo to Vienna among those arrested.

The number of the latter rose to 14 by the end of the day, mainly from the arrested offender’s circle of acquaintances, Austrian Interior Minister Karl Nehammer said at an evening press conference, the MTI reported. According to the head of the ministry, the suspects were detained for investigation and, according to the results of the preliminary investigation, they were able to actively participate in the preparation of the terrorist attack. He told the Austrian news agency APA that

“This shows the constant and intolerant struggle of the police and prosecutors in our country (Austria).”

He had previously mentioned that ammunition and other evidence had been seized from the perpetrator’s apartment, which had not yet been evaluated, and that there were already clear indications that the killer was close to the Islamic State.

Meanwhile, according to the MTI, the North Macedonia police have reported that three people who may have been involved in the terror attack have dual citizenship between Austria and North Macedonia. All three were born in Austria, the police agency added, identifying them only by the initials of their names. By the way, two Swiss nationals were arrested in Winterthur in connection with the Vienna murder on Tuesday afternoon. Authorities said they may have been in contact with the attacker.

Traces of Viennese terror lead to the Balkans

The susceptibility of second-generation Muslims to radical teachings in Austria is perhaps even greater than in the homeland of their parents.

The Vienna-born assailant had a criminal record. In April 2019, he was sentenced to 22 months in prison for attempting to travel to Syria to join a jihadist organization called the Islamic State. Austria’s Interior Ministry said he was undoubtedly a believer in the Islamic State, and it had been previously announced that there was no indication that a second perpetrator had also been involved in the murder Monday night in Vienna.

The Austrian government will hold a virtual meeting on Wednesday, in which Nehammer will give an assessment of the situation.

The lower house of the Austrian parliament (Nationalrat) will meet on Thursday and its agenda will include a government statement on the terrorist attack in Vienna, announced President Wolfgang Sobotka.

The Austrian Ministry of Education also stated that

Starting Wednesday, regular classroom education will resume in Vienna.

On Tuesday, after the murder, authorities decided that the students would not be required to go to school. In Austria these days they are returning to distance education due to the coronavirus epidemic.
