Shots were fired and a murderer blew himself up in central Vienna on Monday night, writes a Kronen Zeitung, citing a police spokesman. According to the newspaper, one of the synagogues in the Austrian capital was attacked on the Seitenstettengasse.

Police preparedness on the site, around Schwedenplatz, is now huge, and authorities have asked those who live there to stay home and be able to, avoid the area and no one to post photos or videos. Interior Minister Karl Nehammer confirmed that a terrorist attack had occurred, writes index.hu.

Witnesses said the shots rang out shortly after 8 p.m. At least 50 of them were heard. Someone told the ORF that they saw a figure running towards Schwedenplatz, firing “savagely” with his automatic weapon. He continued all the way to Schwedenplatz, where the police arrived and started shooting at him.

According to the Kronen Zeitung, not only was a murderer attacked, his companions fled, leaving several dead and wounded. Kurier reports seven dead and several injured.

Among the fatalities is a police officer. A policeman guarding a synagogue was seriously injured.

According to the Kronen Zeitung, the Israeli community security service is asking Austrian Jews to stay at home. The leader of the Austrian Jewish community, Oskar Deutsch, said it was unclear if the synagogue was the target because it was closed at the time of the attack.
