Index – National – Denial of the mask is more dangerous than a mass demonstration or a football match

“A new world begins”, “we press because we have to press”

– In short, this message was recently transmitted by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and National Medical Director Cecília Müller. However, at the moment, no new epidemiological measures have been decided, as in a government laboratory in Austria, but the use of masks has become the most important tool to control the coronavirus. Hardening of the concrete means that current rules, and emphatically the rules for wearing masks, would be more strongly enforced.

While the issue of access restrictions has once again been on the agenda in several Western European countries and attempts are being made to block the spread of the virus with shutdowns, it appears that the Hungarian government, despite concerns about the economic consequences,

a controlled defense would avoid more drastic measures.

In his usual radio interview on Friday, Viktor Orbán said that he did not believe in multiplying the rules, but in enforcing existing rules, and now the time has come to enforce the rules. He also highlighted that

Cecília Müller told public service television that she was confident that if everyone followed the rules, avoided the crowd, the mass events, no drastic changes would be needed.

It is a question of how long, in addition to enforcing the rules on the use of masks, the introduction of austerity similar to that of Western countries can be postponed if the number of positive cases increases. In the first wave, lower figures than today also led to the imposition of a curfew.

Cecília Müller also acknowledged that the time may come in Hungary when significant changes will be needed, but I would like to avoid it. At the press conference of the operational tribunal, the national chief physician emphasized that in the current situation, we are defending ourselves and looking for each other, not loopholes.

Minister Gergely Gulyás, who presides over the Prime Minister’s Office, has already said in the Inforádió Aréna program that due to the spread of the epidemic, it is evident that the current measures are not enough and a further tougher will be decided at the government meeting . He has not yet mentioned details, but in relation to sporting events, he said, where the mandatory wearing of masks is not observed, clubs must be punished there, either with closed goalkeeping matches or the stadium must be closed.

Under the most recently announced legislation, wearing a mask is mandatory, including at sporting and outdoor events, as well as in restaurants and entertainment venues.

Mass demonstration versus soccer match

In recent days and weeks there has been a strong political debate about what is epidemiologically riskier, a massive demonstration of thousands, such as the SZFE students organized by the university autonomy on October 23, or a football match like the Fradi-Újpest. , which also had thousands.

Neither the first nor the second could fully comply with the physical distance of one and a half to two meters, nor the use of masks. However, there may be more possibilities to enforce these rules in stadiums that are otherwise regularly disinfected than, for example, a marching demonstration.

The current epidemiological regulations do not yet prohibit the organization of mass demonstrations, and the parties have been and will be from the Fradi-Újpest party. For now.

Can the inevitable come?

Zsolt Boldogkői, molecular biologist, virologist, doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and head of the Department of Medical Biology at the University of Szeged, said that in response to the Index, outdoor events where many people are in close physical contact are more risky.

Watching a soccer game is more dangerous if the rules that only one out of three chairs are sold are not followed and the fans / spectators do not sit next to each other or wear a mask.

According to Zsolt Boldogkői, indoor events are much more dangerous than outdoor events. The virologist reminded him that a study confirms that people who live in a home are the most likely to transmit the virus.

Following current national and European trends in the epidemic, I believe that the introduction of stricter forms of social distancing is inevitable.

The virologist believes. Added:

This should definitely be done, as it can also cause economic damage with increased health risk.

If there will be many sick and infected people, many will not be able to work directly due to the disease or indirectly due to the need to care for the sick family member.

He pointed.

In Zsolt Boldogkői’s opinion, to protect the economy more effectively, defense should be regulated more specifically. When commuting to work is not required, a home office should be introduced and there should be online education in primary schools, secondary schools and universities.

People at risk should be better protected, for example by helping them to shop more efficiently. In the first wave, a shopping time zone (between 9 and 12 hours) was introduced for the elderly (over 65 years) most at risk of contracting the virus.

The virologist agrees that mask use will be adjusted and offenders may face severe penalties.

Unfortunately, viral skepticism, and the denial masked within it, affects significant masses. The spiritual leaders of these people must be restrained in some way.

Zsolt Boldogkői told the Index.

Cecília Müller and Ágnes Galgóczi, head of the Department of Epidemiology at the National Center for Public Health (NNK), also drew attention to the fact that rejection of the virus hinders defense mechanisms. Facebook has previously removed various virus and denial mask groups / pages, however the camp of skeptics in Hungary is still active on the social network.
