There is growing resistance from students and professors to the erosion of the autonomy of the University of Theater and Film Arts (SZFE) due to the government’s decision to continue the university as a foundation under Attila Vidnyánszky. More and more world-famous artists are joining the solidarity movement around SZFE, but the Vidnyánszky family is not expanding. The declaration of solidarity of the citizens of the Corvinus University of Budapest was launched in the form of a petition, in which they defend the University of Theater and Film Arts (SZFE) and the protection of university autonomy and freedoms.

We believe that academic freedom, university autonomy, unity of research and education, and humanism are values ​​that are a precondition for universities to fulfill their mission of public service.

– says the statement, which was signed by almost 120 people on Wednesday night. They go on to say that the government can only intervene in higher education in a continuous dialogue with interested parties, in accordance with the principles established in the Magna Carta University of European universities and with the utmost respect for the rights enshrined in the Basic Law.

Corvinus was the first university in a state to be reserved by a foundation. A statement of solidarity would have been discussed by the Corvinus union here at the university senate meeting, but this was prevented by the rector of the university and the president of the Senate, András Lánczi, based on the information we have learned.
