Hungary’s ambassador to Kiev, István Íjgyártó, was summoned to Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry on Monday and handed over a protest list after the Ukrainian ministry accused Budapest of directly interfering in the electoral process the day before in connection with Sunday’s local elections, a local MTI correspondent reported.

Ukraine mentions political interference, threatening the Orbán government with a tough response

At the request of the Ambassador, the press department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine reported to the Yevropey Pravda news portal. In a statement issued on Sunday night, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry accused Budapest of directly interfering in the electoral process, for which it presented a “tough reaction.” The Ministry responded that the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Péter Szijjártó, encouraged the Hungarians of Transcarpathia to vote in favor of the candidates of the Hungarian Cultural Association of Transcarpathia (KMKSZ) and Zoltán Babják, Mayor of Beregszász.
