Rudi Vervoort, the prime minister of the Brussels region, justified the strict regulations with rising infection rates in and around the capital. The Brussels rules toughen national measures for a week, and Belgium currently has a curfew from midnight to 5 a.m. Bars and restaurants are closed for at least a month.

According to the regional decision on Saturday, all stores in Brussels must close at 8pm next month. One person per family can shop at a time. Eligible restaurants can sell ready-to-eat food until 10 pm Telecommuting, when possible, becomes mandatory. All sports facilities must be closed, including swimming pools and gyms. It is prohibited to carry out any non-professional sports competition, even for children under 12 years of age. School trips and internships are not allowed for ages 12 and up. Cultural centers, theaters, cinemas, libraries and museums are also closing.

In Brussels, every seventh virus test gives a positive result, there is not a single municipality in the capital where the number of cases remains below the national average. There are currently at least 500 infected people for every 100,000 inhabitants in the capital region. According to data published by the Belgian Institute of Public Health on Saturday, an average of 11,200 new coronavirus infections were recorded daily in Belgium during the week, 56 percent more than the previous week. Experts expect the number of positive virus tests per day to exceed 20,000 next week.
