The Austrian Ministry of Health reported a record number of new corona infections on Saturday, a day before new epidemiological restrictions took effect.

According to the ministry, there have been 3,614 new cases of infection in the last 24 hours, a significant increase from 2,571 the day before.

In Austria, an average of 172.1 people have been registered in the last seven days for every 100,000 inhabitants. By comparison, in Germany, the rate is 68.4 percent, according to a survey by the Robert Koch Institute.

In Austria, the number of people who have contracted the virus so far is close to 80,000. A total of 965 people died from complications of the Covid-19 disease caused by the infection, according to a summary from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

The most serious epidemic situation occurs in the provinces of Salzburg, Tirol and Vorarlberg, among others.

New restrictions will take effect on Sunday. For smaller private meetings, a maximum of six people can be in a closed room and 12 outdoors at a time. They can accommodate up to a thousand in larger enclosed spaces and up to 1,500 for massive outdoor events. The list of places where the use of a protective mask is mandatory has been expanded, so that, for example, it should be included in train stations and shopping centers. This has already been mandatory in public transport and ski lifts.
