Index – National – It is a bad idea to breathe in four settlements today

In four settlements, the air quality is already unhealthy due to the massive high concentration of small aerosol particles (PM2.5), the National Center for Public Health (NNK) told MTI on Saturday. According to information from the Mayor’s Office, there is still no smog situation in Budapest, but if air pollution increases, there may be a traffic restriction.

According to the NNK, the air in Kazincbarcika, Putnok, Sajószentpeter and Várpalota is considered unhealthy.

Also due to the small amount of flying dust, the air from nine more settlements was classified as objectionable based on the air hygiene index. These are: Budapest, Vác, Esztergom, Sopron, Győr, Székesfehérvár, Szeged, Miskolc and Nyíregyháza.

The NNK emphasized that sensitive populations are not recommended to stay outdoors in unsanitary settlements for a longer period of time. Patients with respiratory diseases in these areas may also need individual protection (such as the use of an inhaler) to increase the dose of the medicine as recommended by a doctor.

However, it was pointed out that in case of unfavorable outdoor air quality, regular and rapid ventilation of indoor air spaces and homes should not be forgotten.

The Mayor’s Office wrote in a statement on Saturday that the current air quality situation in Budapest does not yet mean a smog situation. At the alarm level of the Budapest smog alert, which also includes traffic restrictions, the mayor orders the restriction or prohibition of the use of vehicles in the administrative territory of Budapest that are not among the exceptions specified in the municipal decree of 2008 on the Budapest smog alert plan. A further review of the environmental classes defined as exceptions must take place no later than the first quarter of 2022, they added.

Again, attention has been drawn to the fact that aerosol particles bind to bacteria, viruses, fungi and other harmful substances and facilitate their entry into the body.

In the case of increased concentrations, regardless of the current epidemiological situation, they are asked to avoid ventilation in the evening and at dawn, especially in the autumn and winter periods, especially in vulnerable population groups (children, the elderly, the sick). Rather, air early in the afternoon between 12 and 3 p.m., and if possible, the outside should be planned for this period.

According to information from the capital, according to the forecast of the National Meteorological Service, the concentration of atmospheric pollutants will remain high on Saturday and is expected to remain high on Sunday, only with a temporary improvement. During the day on Monday, the air will continue to be clear due to the intensification of the south wind, but a deterioration trend is expected in the continuation, they indicated.
