At a press conference organized for this occasion, Tibor Bolla, CEO of BKV, said that Metro 3 transports more than half a million passengers a day, which is more than the daily passenger traffic of the entire national railway network, therefore that their role is unquestionable. The subway section now ceded was built in 1975, so the professionals had to renew a 45-year-old technique.

Bolla also said that most of the developments have already been made on the affected stretch (Határ út, Pöttyös utca, Ecseri út, Népliget stations), but there are even smaller works, such as accessibility, that will be completed later, but not interfere. then the traveling public.

According to the CEO of BKV, the investment was hampered by several factors, in addition to the Covid-19 epidemic, it was also difficult for contractors to find asbestos in the stations, which could only be removed with special equipment.

In the southern section now ceded, the cabin was also completely renovated, with a total of 14,000 square meters of roof that had to be replaced, but the most important work was not the modernization of the road network and the electrical network.

Mayor Gergely Karácsony said at the press conference

Metro 3 is not only a capital but also a national affair,

It is important that the whole country can finally travel in the conditions of the 21st century.

The first man of Budapest also invited representatives of the government and former mayor István Tarlós to the ceremony, who launched the project, but none of them attended, but the former mayor sent greetings to all, which his successor interpreted for those present .

The mayor thanked the people of Budapest for their patience, on the one hand, because they waited a lot to renovate the busy metro line and endure the inconvenience of construction. At the same time, he indicated that he is asking everyone for more patience, since his difficulty has just arrived.

After the renovation of the previously completed northern section and the southern section now delivered, the reconstruction of the central section from Oradea Square to Lehel Square will only start on November 7, which BKV plans to last until the end of 2022.

Settlement dispute

The difficulty really arises now, because a serious settlement dispute is still going on between Swietelsky Vasúttechnika Kft., Which is making the investment, and BKV Zrt.

The construction company demands from BKV an amount of 18.4 billion HUF, however, BKV does not consider it correct to pay an amount of 10 billion HUF.

Metro M3: the surface is already chattering, still listening to the deep

The renovation will continue in November

On the spot, we asked Tibor Bolla if the dispute over the settlement could jeopardize the renovation of the central section. The CEO of BKV told Index that this was even discussed with the company yesterday. According to Bolla, the positions were converging, but they still could not agree.

We are commitments, but we only support payments that are legitimate and can be substantiated.

– said the CEO of BKV, who also revealed that the possibility is reserved for Swietelsky, if he does not agree with the BKV agreement, to enforce his other claims in court. So far, the company has not accepted this.

A new tender may come

Obviously we have an alternative B

– said Bolla, who said that the deadline was October 30, if there was no agreement by then, he would consider the negotiations closed from then on.

We also asked whether it was conceivable that if a deadline could not be agreed upon, a new contractor would be sought.

In response, Bolla said that works that BKV could not carry out on its own would have to be tendered. The necessary documentation has already been prepared, but at the same time they are still waiting to reach an agreement with the other party at the negotiating table.
