Members of the opposition withdrew from the Chamber when András Zsolt Varga was appointed. The two-thirds vote went smoothly.

The lack of a judicial past did not really prevent Zsolt András Varga from presiding over the Curia: after a secret vote by two-thirds of the parliament, he was granted the position for nine years, thus replacing Péter Darák. Although the MSZP wanted to postpone the vote, it was rejected.

The opposition deputies simply withdrew from the Chamber after the vote for János Áder’s candidate. There were 161 votes in favor, no invalid votes. Of these, 135 were affirmative, 26 no, and zero abstentions. The result was applauded by the pro-government deputies and Varga was sworn in.

Zsolt András Varga had already passed the hearing of the Parliament’s Justice Commission on October 8: at that time, the members of the commission supported the nomination with nine votes in favor and two against. (Unlike the National Council of Judges, which did not support the nomination). He also answered questions that seemed shameful to him before the parliamentary committee: for example, if it did not seem incompatible to him to have worked as a Deputy Attorney General for years and have no judicial experience. According to him, as president of the Curia, he will have very little influence on convictions and will be able to rely on his legal past in this situation (he has worked at the Constitutional Court so far), and his working relationship with Péter Polt did not leave such a deep mark. as many had speculated.

Referring to the Crown Prosecutor, Ferenc Vargha emphasized at the time that, according to him, political independence is not the greatest threat to judicial independence – because it is illegal and easy to resist – but the public is a burden.

András Varga, confidant of Péter’s Attorney General, recognized in professional circles but who has never worked as a judge, may become the head of the Supreme Judicial Board. It was already heard by the Parliamentary Judicial Commission and, as it was possible to get involved, it won the support of the ruling majority.
