Dozens of suspected Islamist extremists were raided in French police houses after a teacher was beheaded in the middle of the street last week. That does not mean that everyone is directly involved in the case, including the alleged endorsement of Samuel Paty’s killer in public publications, the BBC writes.
The interior minister said they wanted to point out that they were taking action against “the enemies of the republic” and that the raids were expected to continue for the rest of the week.
According to the government, 51 French Muslim organizations are also being investigated, which they are willing to liquidate if they are found to hate. Among them is a group called “Collectif Contre l’Islamophobie”, which defines itself as a human rights organization against Islamophobia and works with the United Nations, among others.
Samuel Paty was killed last Friday, and the culprit, an eighteen-year-old Moscow-born man born in Chechnya, was shot and killed by police. The teacher had been threatened several times before for showing the children Mohamed cartoons. In 2015, the editors of a satirical article called Charlie Hebdo were massacred after the same drawings were published.
Eleven people were arrested in connection with the murder. President Emmanuel Macron referred to the incident as an Islamist terrorist attack.
