On the 185-kilometer journey from a military airport near Codroipó, three second-rate ascents awaited the field in front of the first-rate Piancavallo in a 1,290-meter-high mountain race.
Rohan Dennis was the last of the second-rate mountains to escape for the day, initially with 12 people, and he started the descent alone, then cut it to the final 14.3 kilometer ascent of 7.9 percent. The Sunweb-led odds pool quickly caught up with the two-time Australian world champion, and at the pace, Spain’s Pello Bilbao and Denmark, who ranked third in third place, were also knocked out early. Among the national riders, Domenico Pozzovivo had already lagged behind, and then Vincenzo Nibali also escaped, while Portuguese Joao Almeida in a pink jersey held out with Wilco Kelderman. The last helper of the Dutch Sunweb captain increased speed 7.5 kilometers before the finish, by that time Almeida had already broken down, only Tao Geoghegan Hart could keep up with the two solar networks.
The British Ineos Grenadiers rider attacked in the last three hundred meters, proving stronger in the six degree cold than Kelderman and his assistant, Jai Hindley from Australia, who took third place on the compound. Geoghegan Hart won the stage for the first time in his career in a three-week round, and recommended his success to the team’s sporting director, Nicolas Portal, who died in early March. And Ineos Grenadiers have already won the fifth stage of this year’s Italian circuit by losing their captain, Geraint Thomas, early on.
Almeida finished the last kilometer alone, finishing fourth in the big fight, holding first place on the compound with a 15-second lead. Of the other rivals Bilbao, Nibali and, presumably out of the race for the compound, Fuglsang posted a good one and a half, Pozzovivo managed almost two minutes.
Valter was no longer in the odds group on the last mountain and finally finished 34th with a lead of more than 9 minutes.
