A red bear was shot in Japan, injuring four people in Hakusan city on Friday and damaging a police car. The 1.3-meter-long, more than 100-pound bear first caused serious injuries to a 95-year-old man and a 63-year-old woman in Isikava governorate in the central part of the island nation, followed by minor injuries to two hunters.

When police found him, the predator went to the back of his car and ripped one of his tires with his claws. The incident took place outside the city of Hakusan, in a rural area but far from the mountains where wild bears live. Early in the morning, local residents pointed out to police that a red bear was lurking in one of the shopping centers.

The beast eventually fled to a dwelling where it was shot by hunters. In Isikava prefecture, last week, the tax on bears was raised to the highest level for the first time in 10 years, after several people saw bears in or near populated settlements. On the Japanese main island of Honshu, where Isikava is also found, the red bear (Asiatic black bear) is the only species of wild bear. The largest-bodied brown bear is found on the northern island of Hokkaido.

Earlier this week, a raised tax on bears was also ordered in Niigata governorate after an elderly woman working in a field died from injuries from a bear attack at the hospital. (Kyodo / MTI)
