“The flood is coming! The flood is coming! “The images in the poem The Tisza by Sándor Petőfi are evoked by the flood situation in northern Hungary. Due to heavy rains, there were also heavy floods in Sajó, Bódva, Hernád and Ipoly.

According to the announcement of the National General Directorate of Water, most of the rain fell in the basins of the Sajó and Hernád rivers (103 and 95 millimeters, respectively), and a new rise in water levels is expected in the next days.

The Sajó in Sajópüspök is close to a peak with a value of 390 centimeters at 8 am on Thursday morning, below, in Sajószentpeter it has only reached the second degree with a water level of 333 centimeters. Here, the peak is expected on Friday above the tertiary level. The river is also flooding in Felsőzsolca: a water level of 254 centimeters was measured at 8 a.m. Thursday morning, the peak is expected to be on Saturday with a water level close to the tertiary level (400 centimeters).

The water level of the Hernád in Hidasnémeti exceeded one degree at night due to the rapid rise in the water level on Wednesday. At 8 a.m. Thursday morning, 372 centimeters were measured and an increase of another 30 centimeters is expected for the afternoon peak. The river also flows intensively in Gesztely: a water level of 213 centimeters was measured on Thursday morning, here the peak is expected on Sunday morning with a water level significantly above the tertiary level.

At Bódva Hídvégardo it was close to a peak with a water level of 250 centimeters at 8 am Thursday and continues to flow: a water level of 196 centimeters was measured on Thursday morning, the peak is expected here on Friday.

In Ipolyon Ipolytarnóc, a water level of 373 centimeters was measured on Thursday morning, which is less than one meter below the previous maximum value (432 centimeters).

The rivers are flooded, several settlements are almost inaccessible.

Experts from the Northern Hungarian Water Directorate are prepared for defense, they have a 24-hour surveillance service along the rivers. If necessary, immediate technical assistance is provided to the defense municipalities. Between Gesztely and Ócsanálos, the construction of a 1,600-meter-long rabbit dam began in the early hours of the year to ensure the protection of Belgrade’s drinking water base.
