There has never been an example of Apple unveiling its new iPhones in mid-October. Apple also introduced four new phones Tuesday night and a smaller, cheaper and smarter speaker.
Contrary to custom, CEO Tim Cook did not review Apple’s results for a long time, so the first novelty appeared in the fourth minute of the virtual presentation held on Tuesday night in Hungarian time: the newest brother of the new HomePod smart speaker, the HomePod mini.
The device, which has been redesigned not only in size and shape, but is spherical rather than cylindrical, has brought no new features: this time again, Apple promises a smart speaker backed by smart sound processing technologies with a quality of exceptional sound. In addition to Apple Music, it will also be possible to listen to music and podcasts through iHeartRadio, Radio.com, TuneIn, Pandora and Amazon Music; support for big competitor Spotify is not on the list. The intelligence of the speaker is provided by Siri Digital Assistant technology, which is common in iPhones, so you can also ask the speaker about the weather, the calendar schedule for that day, the latest news and send a message, by example.
The HomePod mini is suitable for controlling smart home devices (compatible with HomeKit technology), from blinds to coffee makers. An interesting novelty is a function called Intercom, which allows us to “shout” in the house to the family, for example, who wants what kind of pizza, family members, from HomePods to AirPods headphones, are caught up in the message and , of course, they can respond.
The $ 99 speaker will launch on November 6.
The beginning of a new era, or five right away
It wasn’t even fifteen minutes before the show that it was already revealed that 5G is coming to iPhones. This, says Tim Cook, marks the beginning of a new era.

The base of the new more angular design has been carved considerably, making it 11% thinner, 15% smaller and 16% lighter, while the screen remained 6.1 inches (2532×1170 pixels) like the iPhone 11 ). On the other hand, it has OLED (Super Retina XDR) technology, which represents a significant improvement in image quality compared to LCD.
Apple promises a more durable solution than standard glass with a special ceramic coating that, as announced tonight, not only makes the new models more durable than previous iPhones, but also better than the glass used by other manufacturers.
The new chip built into the iPhone 12 (A14 Bionic) is of course faster this time than its predecessor and consumes less power. Apple says the chip-based six-core processor is 50 percent faster than any other mobile processor, just like the graphics controller (GPU) is similar to the field.
How the impressive performance on paper will be demonstrated in practice will be demonstrated by the game League of Legends: Wild Rift, which will arrive in a matter of weeks, and which Apple and publisher Riot Games say will harness the full power of the new chip.
The iPhone 12 comes with a dual camera system, with two 12-megapixel modules on the back, a wide module (f / 1.6) and an ultra-wide one (f / 2.4). Apple promises that the iPhone 12 will be able to take images much more beautiful than ever, both day and night. Also, even the front camera (selfie) will take good photos at night.
It was announced as a great novelty, but more a small curiosity is that Apple has transferred the MagSafe name that was previously used in laptops to the world of telephones. In the case of iPhones, this refers to wireless charging, and the point is that the device and charger are “docked” by tiny magnets, thus avoiding a situation where someone inadvertently puts their device on the charging bank. and because the energy is transferred and received. The surfaces are not covered exactly, so the device does not charge (or does not charge correctly).
Advertised for $ 799, the iPhone 12 will feature all the features of its little brother, the $ 699 iPhone 12 minibus, which has a noticeably smaller 5.4-inch screen, but is smaller in size than the 4.7-inch iPhone 8. due to its design. (thus smaller than the new iPhone SE released in the spring). So, Apple says that the iPhone 12 mini is the smallest and lightest 5G mobile in the world.
We are already writing here, but it is true for all the new iPhone 12 models in the article that the rumors turned out to be true: in exchange for the price, neither a headset nor a charging head will end up in the box. The cargo line, on the other hand, remains.
Not only in size, but also in knowledge, the Pro versions differ from the iPhone 12 and 12 mini models, which also have a more angular design than older iPhones. But the size is also worth talking about because it has changed: after the 5.8-inch screen of the Pro models of recent years, the new one already has a 6.1-inch screen, and the Pro Max has gained weight of 6.5 inches to 6.7. Apple has no longer been able to solve this by keeping the size of the case, this year’s phones have gotten a bit bigger.
The novelties and the dominance of the A14 Bionic chip will also be reflected in the Pro models, of course Apple’s most powerful chip today.
Compared to the base model, the Pro and Pro Max superpowers are around the camera this time too. Importantly, the triple solution was maintained, unlike some rumors, a fourth unit was not placed on the island of the rear camera. According to Tuesday’s presentation, real improvements to the 4x optical zoom system include a 47 percent larger sensor in the 12-megapixel wide-angle unit, this time with built-in enhanced optical image stabilization, and Apple ProRaw, primarily designed for professional photographers using the RAW (RAW) format. they will be happy.
In addition to still images, you will be able to record videos in better quality, among other things, there is 10-bit HDR, Dolby Vision HDR, 60fps 4K on board. Anyone less interested in different technical terms should know enough: Apple promises to make the most beautiful videos with the iPhone 12 Pro.
A major innovation of the Pro models, which also support MagSafe wireless charging, is that Apple has doubled its long-standing 64GB of storage, so phones can be ordered with at least 128GB of storage without hitting the price. (Of course, with the opposite sign, leaving the charging head and headphones does not affect the price tag, either.)
The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro can be pre-ordered starting Friday (October 16) and will be available a week later (October 23). The iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max are expected to pre-order before November 6 and will be available on November 13.
