The Christmas fair in Vörösmarty square was blown up

This year in Advent, Vörösmarty Square, one of the ten most beautiful Christmas fairs in Europe, will not be held in the traditional way, Napi.hu discovered. The tender for catering companies, just two weeks earlier, was abruptly withdrawn by the capital. It is still questionable whether the artisans and craftsmen will move to Vörösmarty square.

It is already certain that in Advent in the center of Budapest there will be no sausages or sausages in the pan, which the guest can sprinkle with tea or mulled wine. But you will also be forced to do without the llama, strudel, and chimney cake.

The non-profit organization Kft of the Budapest Tourism and Festival Center (BFTK) announced the usual Christmas tender on September 24, 2020. The submission deadline was October 8. However, one day before the deadline, applicants were notified that the application had been withdrawn without justification, Napi.hu learned.

In the withdrawn application it can be read that this year, at the time of the coronavirus epidemic, when there are practically no foreign tourists in Budapest, the rent for the catering units to be installed in Vörösmarty Square was set quite high. The rent for the largest pavilion measuring 60 square meters would have been HUF 22 million net, while the rent for the smallest pavilion measuring 12 square meters would have been HUF 8 million net.

This amount should have been managed by the applicants. All this in a fleeting six weeks, since this year the fair is scheduled to only open on November 20 – compared to that, the guests were already waiting since November 8 of last year, that is, for almost two months .

All of this would have culminated this year in a disguised price increase. “To support and ensure the quality of the event”, special awards and contributions would have been introduced. An electricity line construction fee, as well as a cleaning and waste management fee, hundreds of thousands of guilders per pavilion, would have been charged, which was unprecedented.

I would be asking the price of a smaller apartment as a rental in the area for a couple of weeks, while in the Center, a foreign tourist cannot be seen as an indicator, and it is feared that the situation will not change much until Christmas. I’m afraid they forgot to count, wrote an armor offer – a businessman ran to our newspaper. The catering companies we interviewed are crying out to Teodóra Bán, the former head of the nonprofit company, saying: things turned out well and more predictably under her leadership.

It is not yet possible to know why the application was withdrawn. If we receive a reply, we will update our article.

Meanwhile, the tender for the craft fair in Vörösmarty Square has not yet been withdrawn. The ad repeatedly emphasized that they would be invited to a food and craft fair, where there would even be food programs.
