Faced with the coronavirus epidemic, János Szlávik, Chief Physician of the Department of the National Institute of Hematology and Infectious Diseases of the Central South Pest Hospital, recommends that everyone get vaccinated against the infusion starting next week.

The number of people infected with the coronavirus and the number of deaths in Hungary has been high in recent days and further growth is expected. The number of infected people is increasing throughout Europe, we have to be prepared for such a high number in Hungary as in the Czech Republic and Romania, the chief doctor said on public television on Sunday.

It remains to be careful with those at risk, the elderly and those with chronic diseases, as 99% of those who die are among them.

János Slavik called protecting people at risk of influenza particularly important, because according to international observations, the chances of death are doubled if someone suffers from a coronavirus and an influenza infection at the same time. Flu vaccines are reliable, safe, and shouldn’t be given only to people who have a fever, are sick, or are allergic to the vaccine, he added.

János Szlávik also spoke about the fact that clinical trials of the active ingredient called remdesivir will begin on Monday at the South Pest Central Hospital, since so far this active ingredient has proven effective against the new type of coronavirus. Several antiviral drugs have been available in Hungary in recent months and will continue to be so in the near future.

The chief physician said the antiviral treatment resulted in more patients recovering much earlier than those who did not receive these drugs, and they were less likely to be admitted to the intensive care unit and more likely to survive. Antiviral drugs are not miracle cures, but they can help cure elderly patients, he said, adding that drugs now under investigation can only be brought to GPs after clinical trials, until then only they can use in hospitals. The chief physician said that regular use of masks, disinfection and maintenance at all times are important to curb the epidemic.
