A bus-sized asteroid passed by Earth – spectacular photos were taken – Terrace

21,000 kilometers from Earth’s surface may seem quite distant, but a comet named 2020 SW has actually raced closer to our planet than the Moon and GPS satellites. And this distance is quite small when viewed on a spatial scale.

Fortunately, there was nothing to worry about, astronomers knew in advance that it would not hit the surface of the Earth. “Although it is not in orbit with Earth, if it were, the meteorite would certainly break apart in the atmosphere,” said a NASA scientist.

They look at the asteroids day and night

At the Catalania Sky Survey program in Arizona, scientists are constantly monitoring asteroids of different sizes, speeds, and orbits, even discovering a meteor called SW in mid-September. They estimate that it can be between 5 and 10 meters in size, even a smaller bus.

Several shots of the spectacular event were published from the Mexican city of Monterrey, from where it was best to see the comet. NASA staff member Paul Chodas said: “Asteroids of this size pass by in large numbers. There are some that approach the Earth every year, in fact it can happen up to several times a year.

While these small meteors are much more difficult to detect, at least they do not pose a threat to life on Earth, while larger, more measurable pieces would already be a serious problem if they reached the planet’s catchment area. Fortunately, they have been monitored for some time, so you can prepare in advance for a potential collision or avoid it.

In the pictures there are 9 astonishing size meteors that crashed into Earth – they couldn’t even transport the biggest one

The oldest and largest known meteorite may have smashed into the planet nearly 80,000 years ago, but no crater was found in its place.
