The coronavirus and the fight against it. The situation at home and in the world.
There was an industrial accident in Dunaföldvár on Friday, several people were injured, the spokesman for the Tolna County Disaster Management Directorate told MTI. Pannonia Bio Zrt. It reported that 28 people were taken to the hospital for examination.
According to the statement by disaster protection spokesman Péter Köves, an unsuitable substance, nitric acid, according to current information, was poured into one of the seven cubic meter outer hypo-tanks of the bioethanol plant, and gaseous chlorine was formed as reaction of the two substances.
Fire extinguishers operate a protective jet around the tank to prevent the spread of dangerous gases. Industrial security professionals are on site, the facility is constantly monitored, and measurements are taken by the mobile disaster management laboratory.
No concentration of hazardous gas in the air can be measured outside of the plant area designated by the protection zone. The resulting gas did not affect neighboring plants and residential areas, they were informed.
Pál Győrfi, a spokesperson for OMSZ, informed MTI by telephone that 15 people in the accident had suffered minor poisonings, while 13 had suffered serious poisonings.
Several ambulances and four rescue helicopters were alerted to the scene, and a special unit called Mass Accidents was even deployed.
Symptoms in people with gas poisoning included sore throat, watery eyes, cough, and shortness of breath. All received on the spot, such as an infusion, oxygen and medications, he added.
The injured were taken to hospitals in Dunaújváros, Székesfehérvár, Szekszárd and Kecskemét for further care and follow-up, Pál Győrfi said.

The fire department prevents the spread of chlorine gas by using a shield blast until additional gas is released as a result of the reaction.
They added that workers injured in the accident will receive all the support they need to return home recovered as soon as possible.
