Just over 88,000 passengers showed up at Budapest’s Liszt Ferenc International Airport in September, 94 percent less than a year earlier. The last time so many tourists were registered in 1973 was in the ninth month of the year at the international airport.

According to the Budapest Airport operator’s announcement sent to MTI on Thursday, the decrease in traffic is not only significant year-on-year, compared to the previous month, August, nearly 78 percent fewer people traveled through the airport.

This year 3.6 million arrivals and departures have visited Ferihegy so far.

At the same time, air freight performs well compared to these figures: 11,000 tonnes of cargo were handled in September, 2.7 percent less than a year earlier.

The airport operator said in a statement that cargo handling company Cargo City is prepared to wait for medical shipments to arrive during the second wave and has begun preparations to transport and store the future vaccine.
