The Hungarian national team will play in Bulgaria the semifinals of the qualifying rounds of the European Championship. The winner of the match will play Iceland or Romania to participate in the European Championship. We follow the events in our constantly updated article.

As in the fall of 2015, this year the Hungarian team will qualify for the European Championship in the knockout rounds. Unlike then, now we have to advance in two duels: first the team will play Bulgaria, and then the winner of this match will bet on Iceland or Romania on November 12. The Iceland-Romania match started at the same time as ours, with Iceland winning 2-0.

The two starting teams:

Bulgaria: Iliev – Cicinho, Terziev, Bozsikov, Nedjalkov – Karabeljov, Malinov – Karagaren, Nedelev, Ivanov – Kraev

Hungary: Gulácsi – Orbán, Lang, Szalai A. – Fiola, Sigér, Nagy Á., Kalmár, Holender – Szalai Á., Sallai

If anyone can be defeated, it is Bulgaria. Many of us have thought about it when we got around the qualifying game. In the Nations League matches played in 2018, when the ranking order of the substitutes was decided, the Bulgarian team still achieved acceptable results, as Hungary was second in their group, and then started on a terrible deep run. In 2019, it did not win the European Championship qualifiers only because it defeated the Czech Republic in the last round without betting, while only three draws were eliminated against Kosovo and back and forth against Montenegro. Fourth place in the Hungarian group isn’t much better than that, but we didn’t make it to the European Championship in a straight line with at least 4 wins – 4 losses.

Before the game, János Hrutka told us: “maybe the balance is tilting a bit towards the Hungarians”, according to him Willy Orban, Péter Gulácsi and Dominik Szoboszlai mark the difference between the two teams. Of the three key players, Szoboszlai was eliminated after several of his teammates were quarantined due to an infection. Marco Rossi decided to replace Zsolt Kalmár.

Both teams started the match in a hurry, with the Bulgarians holding much more ball in the opening minutes. Nedelev’s free kick from 30 meters in the second minute could have been dangerous, but we didn’t have to get to the heart, it was so bad.

In the 12th minute we reached the first Hungarian situation: Sallai from the corner of five instead of shooting, Kalmár tried to pass, Cicinho had to save.

In the 17th minute, Hungary took the lead! Squid took a corner, Orban stood at the corner of the five, and sent the ball into the goal with his chest, 0-1.

After the goal, Bulgaria intervened: from the attack behind the center of the field, Nedelev sent a strong shot to the goal, the great courage of Gulácsi was needed. Moving away from the corner was a smooth affair after that, but in the 20th minute, Orban had to head a pass from Cicinho in front of goal. Fortunately, the Hungarian team quickly settled in, the Bulgarian pressure did not last long. The minutes passed in mild boredom, but of course the Bulgarians should have started something with that.

And they changed: in the 37th minute Nedelev got into a great situation, Gulács had to defend. The Bulgarian team tried to increase the pressure at that time, the Hungarians preferred to stick to the principle of “little situation is enough if we make good use of it”. In extra time, Kraev cornered the ball in goal with a beautiful play, only Gulácsi’s defense was more beautiful. Suddenly the end of the half was steep, but the Hungarian team defended the Bulgarian corners, so in vain the number of shots was 6-2, the number of shots on goal was 3-1 and the score of the break was 0-1.

The other branches of the qualifiers
Leg B: Bosnia and Herzegovina-Northern Ireland 1-0, Slovakia-Ireland 0-0
Branch C: Norway-Serbia 0-0, Scotland-Israel 0-0
Branch D: Georgia-Belarus 1-0, North Macedonia-Kosovo 2-1

The Hungarian team started the second half perfectly: Kalmár launched a free kick from about 25 meters, the strong shot bounced off the wall of the line, then even on the rainy grass he accelerated even more, Iliev was defenseless, so in minute 47 0-2 it was work.

And what was at least good news: after the second Hungarian goal, it did not seem at all that the Bulgarian team could score two goals, or at least a big change would have been needed from them. It was not possible to sit with such a Hungarian advantage, but the Bulgarian team did not show the game as it did in the last minutes before the break, so he could understand why the European qualifiers, who do not follow Bulgarian football daily, closed almost no victory. events.

Let’s not wait for a stable selection and national players in Ferencváros, which is preparing for BL, until the academic system is working. We spoke to János Hrutka before the national team’s game against Bulgaria about the real value of the European Championship, Balázs Dzsudzsák, and the huge amount of money flowing into football.
