According to an article in Tuesday’s issue, MFGT applied for and received a permit from the Energy and Utilities Regulatory Authority of Hungary (MEKH) to store a total of another 200 million cubic meters of gas in two of its four underground facilities: Kardoskút and Zsana. This amount represents 4.51 percent of MFGT’s base capacity of 4.43 billion cubic meters. The permit is conditionally valid until March 25, 2025 at the latest, but the company can request an extension.

According to the newspaper, the high demands cited by the company are likely to be driven less by expected demand from home users, given the economic slowdown and softer parcels. Rather, it may be geopolitical, security of supply or normal business considerations. MFGT was observed to have a good after-tax profit of 9.5 billion HUF last year, after nearly 7.5 billion HUF in 2018.
