Kenzo Takada, founder of the fashion brand that bears his name, died at the age of 81 in a French hospital.

Kenzo Takada, known for his colorful and floral clothing, was the first Japanese designer to break into the Paris fashion world, the BBC writes in his memory.

Taking nearly 8,000 plans, Takada settled in France in the 1960s and spent the rest of his career there. He founded his clothing brand in the 1970s, which he sold in 1993, and retired from fashion six years later.
