On Friday, October 2, the new Internet news portal, Telex.hu, launched by the former editorial office of Index, was launched. The project was supported by 34,000 private donors, including € 200,000 from a Czech businessman. They plan to move to a subscription model at a later date.
It’s up to you to just finally launch Telex with seventy employees on October 2, 2020! – The editor-in-chief of the new site, Veronika Munk, and the current managing director of the publisher, Márton Kárpáti, will begin their introduction, in which they report on the launch of the new Hungarian news portal.
The site was developed two months ago, with community funding through a sponsorship campaign. The portal received nearly 34,000 donations, and Czech businessman Zdenek Bakala, one of the owners of local media company Economia, sent the team € 200,000 (HUF 71.77 million at current exchange rates) unconditionally.
At the moment, the site is available for free and the managers say that it will be operational for several months with the current, especially large staff. “Even in the national media market, even with very careful management, it does not seem sustainable to run a newspaper with purely advertising revenue where readers can find out what is happening in the world at any time of the day,” so they will switch to a subscription model in the future.
The 70-strong staff members were mostly employees of the Index.hu news portal, until a long-running dispute between the foundation that owns the newspaper and the editorial board rescued Szabolcs Dull, editor-in-chief, in mid-July. . Colleagues did not consider the newspaper’s independence to be assured at the time, as it had been stipulated in previous consultations that outside interference with the editorial unit was considered unacceptable. Some of the previous authors continue their careers elsewhere, but most formed Telex together, while Index.hu moves forward with new hires.
