The new leadership of the University of Theater and Cinematographic Arts (SZFE) has started work, while students have blocked the entrance and workers are on strike, Gábor Szarka, the newly appointed SZFE chancellor, said on Kossuth Radio on Friday. .

The new leader reported that he was unable to enter the SZFE building on Vas Street for the first time, and since then students have also blocked the university building on Szentkirályi Street. He also indicated that the situation was not easy, but of course he began to work, as did the two vice-rectors. He had already held his first briefing for his immediate subordinates at an outside location. He also logged into the university’s mail system so he could keep in touch with those inside.

He emphasized that they do not try to solve the situation by force, they try to do the work from an external place, to obtain information and make decisions. It would be better to negotiate with the insiders, but there are few options for that. We do what we know, ”he added.

He also referred to the eight strikes carried out by the strike committee, six of which were against the maintainer, but which cannot be addressed as an employer. What they did, the need to increase wages, they did, and instead of the 10 percent requested, a 15 percent wage increase was established from January. However, the strike committee did not accept its terms.

He stressed that they are in contact with the strike committee, communicating by email. What is its specific and real purpose, I find it difficult to articulate after that, ”he added. According to Gábor Szarka, there is a large majority who want peace and quiet, as well as a normal life at the university.

He recalled that on Thursday Minister Gergely Gulyás announced that the university’s budget would double next year. Developments, developments that might not be very common in the university’s history, could begin in the next few years, he stressed, adding that it is not possible to know what the protesters inside are saying but not.

As he said, the new leadership and the board of directors will do everything possible to resolve the situation through dialogue, but there is no will to do so now. This situation also compromises the operation, he said, by not being able to sign the documents.

“I believe that sooner or later people, workers, teachers who are moderate and open to dialogue with a willingness to compromise should make their voices heard to have someone with them, in addition to aggression and blockade, to negotiate in a meaningful way”, He said.
