Turnout in municipal elections was now the lowest since the regime change, at 46 percent.

In Romania, exit poll estimates released after Sunday’s municipal elections indicate advancement of the center-right National Liberal Party (PNL), which controls the minority, and the critical Save the Romania (USR) system, which also defines itself as a center-right force.

According to the preliminary results available to them, PNL won in nearly 50 percent of the county’s municipalities, Prime Minister Ludovic Orban said shortly after the ballot box closed. The president of the PNL also added, according to a Transindex report, that they calculated that they would give the mayor in 17-20 head offices and that there would be no less than 1,500 mayors for the political body.

In Bucharest, two polls also show a 47 percent victory for Nicusor Dan, an independent candidate backed by the PNL and USR, over current Social Democratic (PSD) mayor Gabriela Firea (39 percent). Nicușor Dan is the new mayor of Bucharest, according to the CURS Avangarde emergency survey in Bucharest. As you know, the NLP candidate reached 47.2 percent, while his biggest opponent, the current mayor, PSD Gabriela Fira, only had 39.

Four years ago, PSD also won all six district mayor positions in Bucharest, one of which it was able to keep. Romania has now had the lowest turnout in municipal elections since the regime change, at 46 percent.
