Amoeba can cause primary encephalitis and meningitis and destroy brain tissue. The study was ordered after a 6-year-old boy in Lake Jackson died of the infection the previous month. Between 2009 and 2018, a total of 34 such cases were reported in the United States.

The brain-eating amoeba usually becomes infected by introducing contaminated water into the body through the nose. It causes inflammation of the brain and meninges, which is usually fatal. This is why many people get the infection while swimming. However, swallowing water is not a danger in itself, nor is it transmitted from person to person.

Residents of 8 Texas settlements were warned Friday not to use the water for anything other than flushing due to amoebas. On Saturday, the ban was lifted everywhere except Lake Jackson, which has a population of 27,000. Residents here are now advised to boil the water before consuming it. (BBC)
