An American citizen was arrested in Thailand for criticizing the hotel of which he was a guest in a written review on Tripadvisor.
Wesley Barnes, who lives and works in a Southeast Asian country, was a guest at the See View Resort on the island of Koh Chang. After his stay, he wrote about the hotel on Tripadvisor that “the staff is unfriendly” and felt that the guest was not being welcomed.
The hotel reported its former guest as a credit crisis, who was also detained for a short time. It is currently being processed.
If convicted, he could face two years in prison or a fine of a good six thousand dollars.
Advocates have long been critical of the defamation and defamation laws in force in Thailand because they are often used by influential actors to suppress opinions they do not like, writes the MTI.
(And you’d have a clue as to what’s causing the most damage to this hotel, a negative review or the fact that half of the world’s press writes that their guests will be jailed.)
