Semmelweis University Medical Imaging Clinic on Facebook revealed details of the story of a patient who had to receive respiratory support for 13 days.

Coronavirus: the second wave

Half a year after the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in the spring, the second wave of the pandemic has arrived. The radical increase in the number of infected is forcing more and more countries to re-impose restrictions, despite the fact that the world economy has not even recovered from the effects of the spring outbreak. According to the posters, the second wave also reached Hungary. Follow our news!

The Semmelweis University Medical Imaging Clinic has posted another case report on its Facebook page. This time, doctors shared details about the illness of a Hungarian in his thirties, as well as some 2D and 3D images of his chest.

On 2D CT images, the dark part of the lung shows air retention areas, which are represented as purple parts on 3D images. The light areas are visible areas affected by viral pneumonia.

As they write, the man went to the university emergency room for shortness of breath and a strong cough, and a CT scan after the patient was admitted also confirmed the suspicion: He had severe pneumonia caused by the coronavirus.

Because his condition deteriorated rapidly, he was admitted to the intensive care unit the same day he was hooked up to a ventilator. The man was finally able to “take it off” after 13 days, which is a long time. Next, you will need rehabilitation and regular breathing exercises.

In relation to the case, the clinic emphasizes that it is important that people, both young and old, follow basic rules such as:

  • proper use of the mask in the community,
  • distance and
  • regular hand washing.
