A biotech company in Lublin, eastern Poland, has produced the world’s first drug of its kind containing immunoglobulins extracted from the blood plasma of people recovering from a coronavirus infection, and testing will begin in October, the researchers announced. manufacturers at a press conference Wednesday.

The drug, which contains specific anti-SARS-CoV-2 immunoglobulins (antibodies) given as muscle injections, can be marketed within a few months of successful clinical trials, mainly in Poland.

The drug, which results in passive immunization and is expected to reduce the number of fatal cases of Covid-19 disease, has the advantage over plasma transfusion therapy currently used in several countries to treat patients of all kinds. blood type. A composition made from fractionated plasma is presumably more effective than plasma because it contains antibodies in concentrated form.

The 120 liters of blood plasma used during production were obtained from the blood of Silesian miners who had recovered from Covid-19 disease and asymptomatic infection with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.

More than 8,000 cases of coronavirus infection have been recorded among Silesian miners since May. Most of them were asymptomatic, with a 99.4 percent recovery as of Wednesday. That day, six new cases were registered among the miners.

There are currently 16,112 active cases, largely asymptomatic, in Poland, of which 974 new cases were reported on Wednesday. A total of 81,673 infections have been recorded since the outbreak. 2,344 patients died, mostly from other chronic diseases.
