The practice of school canteens is also changing due to the coronavirus epidemic: several institutions have already changed their policies to comply with the recommendations, providing students with longer lunch hours, Bence Rétvári, vice president of the Popular Party, told MTI on Wednesday Christian Democrat.
In order to reduce the health risk of the epidemic, each school received a cross-sectional recommendation, an important part of which is the series of proposals for school meals, Rétvári said. This affects the duration and timing of meals, meals in the classroom, and hygiene rules. School practice and policy have changed in various ways.
The cafeteria is one of the largest community spaces in the school, where there is a risk of mixing classes and transmitting the virus, said the vice president of the KDNP.
He added that, according to the recommendation sent to schools, special attention should be paid to washing or disinfecting children’s hands before and after meals. The lunchroom has a higher chance of getting students into the mouth so that the virus can pass from hands to mouth, so hand washing is essential.
He also drew attention to the fact that it is recommended to ensure adequate distance between students when queuing. Special attention should be paid to cleaning the dining area and periodically disinfecting the plates, cutlery, glasses and trays used by children. When compiling the menu, preference should be given to dishes that can be prepared with safe heat treatment.
In addition to regular disinfection, efforts should be made to organize intermittent, time-separated, class-based lunches. If the local conditions of the institution do not allow it, the departments involved can have lunch in their own classrooms, subject to the necessary hygiene regulations, he emphasized.
According to Bence Rétvári, to follow the recommendations in practice, several institutions have already changed their policies, in such a way that they provide students with a longer lunch hour, allowing for the fewest possible personal contacts between classes.
Observing personal hygiene rules and precautions in schools can reduce risk. The government’s goal is to conduct the school year in a normal and traditional way. Hungary and schools should also work, said the vice president of the KDNP.
