A man convicted of hundreds of millions of budget fraud in Hungary was hiding in Tenerife, who was detained by Hungarian investigators with the help of local police in cooperation with the European police, Police.hu reported.

The police website reported that participants of a criminal organization in Szeged were sentenced to prison for 892 million HUF due to budget fraud in March. However, one of the scammers sentenced to eight to six months, Zoltán J., escaped from a prison abroad, for which a European arrest warrant was issued against him. The search for the fugitive criminal was initiated by personnel from the Special Investigation Unit of the National Investigations Bureau (KR NNI) of the Police, a specialized police unit.

The man’s tracks led to the Canary Islands governed by Spain, so the police contacted the local authority through the European Network of Targeting Units. The cooperation was successful, as Zoltán J. was arrested in Tenerife on September 18 and is currently awaiting his extradition to Hungary.

Investigators also seized large amounts of drugs, psychoactive substances, medications, and money.
