The mayor of Porto, Rui Moreira, threatened to sue the European Football Association (UEFA) for holding the UEFA Super Cup match Bayern Munich-Seville not in its original location, in his city, but in Budapest, the magazine writes German Soccer Kicker.

Rui Moreira’s argument, according to the Kicker report, is based on the fact that the European Super Cup match was removed from his city due to the coronavirus situation, but now, despite the increase in infections in Hungary, this it does not seem to force UEFA to act.

“I hope we get a satisfactory response to our complaint. If not, we will go to court, we will find some in Geneva near the UEFA headquarters. He said Moreira at a meeting of the Porto City Council on Monday, ironically adding: “I didn’t even know that the pandemic would prevent Budapest …”
In his complaint to UEFA, the mayor also points out that at the time of the eighth final of the Champions League, the level of contagion in the host Lisbon was higher than when the decision was made in Porto.
“If it had been said that we did not want another event in the same country in quick succession due to the Champions League final in Lisbon, it would have been understandable. Or they could have foreseen that, in return, Porto could host another event in two years’ time ”. quotes Kicker from the mayor’s letter.
At the same time, the German newspaper reminds us that the transfer of the Super Cup match from Porto to Budapest was officially due to the coronavirus epidemic, but in the context of a comprehensive change in the competition calendar, and UEFA justified it by what the mayor described as acceptable, that is, there would be no end to the tournaments of both clubs in Portugal. According to the mayor of Porto, his city suffered material damage not only because of unnecessary preparations, but also because UEFA’s decision to move the settlement without consulting – and what they “learned from the media” – suggested that Porto was not a unsafe place in terms of the epidemic.
The Portuguese national news agency, LUSA, also reports that Moreira is also blaming the Portuguese central government for not pushing for the Porto Super Cup, while fully supporting Lisbon in the BL-Eighth Final.
Kicker concludes his article by saying “know”: there were also sports policy reasons why the Super Cup match had just moved to Budapest, as the UEFA vice president is none other than the “richest man in Hungary”, Sándor Csányi.
