Passenger traffic at Liszt Ferenc International Airport continues to be drastically affected by travel restrictions imposed due to the coronavirus epidemic, expected annual passenger traffic was reduced to 17 years ago and the airport operator expects a decrease of around 90 percent in the fall and winter months. Therefore, Budapest Airport Zrt. It is implementing another downsizing, which is expected to affect 236 people.

According to its announcement, by August 2020, 1.15 billion air passengers in Europe had disappeared due to travel restrictions imposed due to the epidemic. Traffic at Budapest airport fell 99.3 percent year-on-year in April, when the epidemic broke out in Europe, and although the summer months showed some increase, new travel restrictions as of September 1 reduced traffic from passengers to early summer levels.

Ferihegy currently has less than three thousand passengers a day, which is 6 percent of the traffic from last September.

The Budapest airport expects that due to flight cancellations and the number of passengers expected, passenger traffic will be a maximum of a third of that planned, up to 5.5 million people this year.

During the first layoffs in May, Budapest airport expected traffic to pick up at a faster pace, so it planned the workforce for the 10 million annual passengers expected at that time and also participated in the salary subsidy program of the government to protect as many jobs as possible. However, by now it has become clear that, on the one hand, new travel restrictions and, on the other, a slower-than-expected return to travel will lead to another significant reduction in airport traffic for months.

In the coming months, the Budapest airport will spend exclusively on the expenses necessary for the safe operation of the airport and will considerably reduce the number of investments.
