The newspaper of the municipality of Miskolc reported that cameras and microphones were found in the room where the general meetings and other events took place during the tour of the council at the end of August, which were not part of the transmission system. According to the city address, this was not communicated at the time of installation or delivery.

During the internal investigation of the case, it was established that at the request of the former mayor of Fidesz Ákos Kriza, with the permission of the then Chief of Cabinet Zoltán Alakszai (later secretary installed in the meeting room. The equipment bought for about four million guilders was of such a quality that every conversation going on in the room could be heard, even the private conversations of deputies or meeting guests. It turned out that the system was independent of the equipment that would otherwise record and mediate meetings of the General Assembly, which is turned off in closed seats, but the camera and the uncovered microphones were able to continue to function, Népszava wrote.

The camera was placed in front of the MP, the two microphones are also of very good quality: so with these devices it was possible to record almost anything that happened in the room.

The control unit did not store the recordings, they could be saved to an unknown external storage location Due to concerns about the operation of the robotic camera and space microphones, the current city administration has instructed the for its dismantling, although this is also an additional cost – read in a statement from the town hall.

András Hollósy, a local government representative and KDNP spokesperson, previously stated that the team only helped prepare the minutes of the general meeting. According to him,

The devices prominently in the room have been seen by left-wing MPs since 2016, but so far they have had no problem with them.

Free Europe e G’s local source put it this way, city hall staff “would not have stabbed themselves in their lives” that the devices work independently of the official system. He said technical colleagues could “get a headset” to know what to look for when crawling.

Rita N. Szántó, press officer for the mayor’s office, informed us of the Index that we had not yet filed a complaint. Following the discovery of the devices, they went to the data protection authority, which launched an investigation. Pending new legal actions, the authority’s decision is awaited.
