The 2015 tragedy of Germanwings Flight 9525 is one of those rare accidents that was not the result of a plane crash or human error, but was caused by an intentional act of one of the pilots. After the accident, which claimed 150 lives, the control of the mental state of the pilots and the rules to stay in the cockpit were tightened.

The Germanwings Airbus A320 took off from Barcelona on March 24, 2015 at 10 am. The 144 passengers on board made their way to Düsseldorf with a crew of six, but their destination was never achieved.

The last radio contact with the flight crew took place at 10:30 am at an altitude of 38,000 feet (11,582 meters). The captain left the cockpit and asked the first officer to take over the radio communications. He recognized this.

What happened next is difficult to understand with common sense. The accident investigation revealed that 45 seconds after the captain’s departure, the selected altitude of the air traffic control unit changed from 38,000 feet to 100 feet. Then the machine began to sink rapidly, averaging 3,500 feet (1,067 meters) per minute.

The next few minutes certainly passed dramatically on board, as there was no reasonable explanation for the rapid descent. Shortly before 10:34 a.m., when the plane was already at 30,000 feet (9,144), the control tower even asked the pilots what the allowed height of the aircraft was, but the first officer did not respond. During the next half minute, the tower made two more attempts to contact the pilots, without success.

The captain was helpless

According to the collection of the black box on the plane, the bell rang to indicate that the captain wanted to enter the cabin. No reply was received. Then the captain tried to reach his partner on the internal phone and someone knocked on the door.

Meanwhile, Marseille air traffic control and the French air force have tried to contact Germanwings on various frequencies, but have not been successful either. As the plane sank further, several loud knocks were heard on the cockpit door, then a warning of the proximity of land sounded. The plane crashed into the mountainside at 10:41 a.m. at 10:41 a.m. in the western Alps of France, near Prads-Haute-Bléone.

All died in the accident, the majority German and Spanish passengers. The impact at a speed of about 700 km / h broke the body of the aircraft into small pieces. The debris scattered up the steep slope could only be reached on foot or by helicopter.

He deliberately led his passengers to their deaths.

For a long time, the cause of the disaster was only guessed, as initially no one thought about the intention. However, the investigation clearly revealed that the accident was a pre-planned suicide action by the co-pilot. Andreas Lubitz, 27, has been with the airline since September 2013, flying 630 hours. Revealed that the first officer with major depression was in medical treatment, however, he did not report this to his employer.

Following the accident, controls on the psychological fitness of pilots in the European Union have been strengthened and support programs have been launched for those struggling with these problems. This disaster has also led airlines to change that. since then, there must always be at least two people in the cabin at the same time; if one of the pilots leaves, a cabin crew enters their seat at that moment.
