Marcel Ciolacu, chairman of the Romanian Social Democratic Party (PSD), said on Wednesday that his party will do everything in its power to get the parliament to vote on the so-called Trianon law, which declares June 4 a Romanian national holiday. The PSD provides the largest faction in parliament.

The day before, President Klaus Iohannis had submitted the legislation for consideration. The draft was originally presented by Social Democrat Titus Corlatean. According to its plans, the parliament will vote and then resubmit the President of the Republic for enactment.

The essence of the legislation is to make the day of the Trianon peace dictatorship a national holiday, and on this day it will be mandatory to display the Romanian flag in all public spaces. The law also allows support for all scientific, cultural and educational activities. and other events promoting Trianon’s decision and the views of the Romanian majority on the matter. The Romanian media will also have to report on the facts.

If Parliament approves the bill in its original version, President Iohannis will be forced to enact it. You have previously challenged the law in the Constitutional Court, but this is only possible once. Iohannis argued against the Trianon law that had been criticized by various experts and NGOs, so he wanted a public debate on the issue where opponents of the law could speak. Then he asked parliament, start the legislative process from scratch with historians, researchers, academics, educational institutions and NGOs.
