László Bertók, Hungarian writer and poet, winner of the Kossuth Prize, founding member of the Digital Literary Academy (DIA), died unexpectedly on Monday at the age of 85, was informed by Jelenkor magazine, of which he was a senior researcher.

László Bertók was born on December 6, 1935 in Vés, Somogy county. In 1955, he was jailed on charges of anti-state agitation for his poems. Between 1959 and 1963 he graduated from Pécs Teacher Training College, and from 1970 to 1973 he studied library science at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest. He lived in Nagyatád since 1959, in 1965 he moved to Pécs. He has been a member of the editorial board of Jelenkor magazine since 1975 and a senior researcher since 1999.

He has published more than twenty volumes of poetry and several volumes of prose. In 1982 he received the Attila József Prize, in 1989 the Graves Prize, in 1990 the Tibor Déry Prize, in 1997 the Laurel Wreath of the Republic of Hungary and in 2004 the Kossuth Prize. She has been a member of the Széchenyi Academy of Literature and Art since 1998. In 2008 she won the Artisjus Literary Prize. That same year he was awarded the title of Honorary Citizen of Pécs. In 2018 he received the Prima Award.
