Hungarian healthcare was unable to cover the huge backlog accumulated in the spring during the quarantine ordered by the coronavirus epidemic. The number of people awaiting surgery increased significantly in June, writes mfor.hu, referring to data from the Administrator of the National Health Insurance Fund.

The largest increases can be observed in these areas:

  • 10 421 people are waiting for cataract surgery, only 259 people were scheduled in June,
  • There are 60 people waiting for laparoscopic gynecological surgeries, while in June only 34 people were waiting,
  • 51 people were waiting for thyroid surgery, while in June only 4 people were waiting,
  • 4458 people are waiting for hip replacement surgery, in June there were 4038 people,
  • 81 people were waiting for significant prolonged spine surgery, 48 people were waiting for them in June,
  • 976 people were waiting for hernia surgeries without implants, while 726 people were waiting in June,
  • There are currently 150 people waiting for vascular surgery, compared to just 37 in June.

Waiting lists have increased only slightly in the following areas:

  • 1613 people are waiting for a diagnostic cardiac catheterization, in June there were 1510,
  • 583 people are waiting for laparoscopic gallstone surgery, there were 441 in June,
  • 942 people are waiting for spinal stabilization surgery, there were 852 in June,
  • 667 people are waiting for abdominal and inguinal hernia surgeries with implants, there were 522 in June,
  • 612 people are waiting for open heart surgery, there were 582 in June,
  • 1613 people are waiting for coronary artery surgery and stent implantation, 1510 people are waiting for it in June,
  • 403 people are awaiting transcatheter heart valve surgery, up from 384 in June.
  • 5860 people are waiting for knee replacement surgery, in June 5656 people were waiting.

The number of waiters for enlarged prostate, tonsillectomy, and sinus surgery decreased compared to mid-summer.

In early September, Miklós Kásler instructed hospitals to release 20 percent of their beds. Of the many thousands of hospital beds that were left empty due to the epidemic, only 287 coronavirus patients were seen on Monday. This is because, few are treated in the hospital with coronavirus infection, the second wave of the virus still affects young people.
