The athlete’s death was caused by cancer.

Sarolta Selmeci, a handball player for German TG Nürtingen, died at the age of 29.

His club announced in late January that he had been diagnosed with cervical cancer in the coach. Monday’s grief report on the team’s website recalls that Selmeci has since undergone surgery and received chemotherapy and radiation therapy, but metastases have developed in his body. He recently returned home to Hungary for more treatments, but died on Sunday.

Sarolta Selmeci previously played handball for Dunaferr NK, Veszprém, Kiskunhalas, Szeged, then Borussia Dortmund, HC Rödertal and SV Werder Bremen before trying out at Nürtingen last year.
