The Japanese Space Agency (JAXA) wants to make 8K images of Mars and its moons, which are then sent back to Earth in a capsule, Engadget writes. The space agency is working with the Japanese broadcaster NHK to develop a device that allows both 4K and 8K recordings, which can then travel aboard the Martian Moon Expedition (MMX) to the red planet and its two moons, Phobos and Deimos.
On the one hand, the future instrument will send the images back to Earth, but it will also store them in full resolution to bring the images back to our planet in a capsule. The returned images can help the instrument to track the behavior of the spacecraft, as this will allow the photos to be compared with the flight data.
MMX will not only take detailed images of Mars, it will also land on Phobos and sample its surface. Japanese researchers hope to learn more about the planet’s past and present. This is also a great opportunity for NHK, as it will have recordings that other stations cannot wait for.
